Building A More Resilient Lancaster
Through Community Composting
Nice To Meet You!
Lancaster Composting Co-Ops is a volunteer-led community initiative that enables Lancaster residents to participate in reducing landfill waste by creating high quality compost.
Prior to the launch of this project in April 2021, Lancaster residents had zero alternatives beyond their own backyards to divert organic food and garden scraps from the general waste stream. Composting is a mainstream activity in American cities – and we believed it was high time for the City of Lancaster to address the existing community desire for sustainability.

How To Become A Co-Op Member
Step 1
Orientations are held regularly at each site. You will have a chance to meet your composting captain, learn how to compost, and meet folks in your neighborhood.
Step 2
Sign The Member Agreement
Simply sign the member agreement. It highlights your role as “steward of the bin” and your promise to participate in periodic work sessions. The agreement also lets us be in touch.
Step 3
Get Composting
Once the agreement is signed, you will receive a code to the combination lock. You can then begin bringing your plant-based scraps to the bin on your own.
